Spain - for beginners !
Embracing the greater part of the Iberian Peninsula at the southwestern tip of Europe, Spain occupies an area of 195,350 square miles and is the third largest country in continental Europe. Besides the mainland, Spain includes the Balearic Islands to the east and the Canary Islands over six hundred miles to the south in the Atlantic Ocean, just off the northwestern shores of Africa. Also belonging to Spain are Melilla and Ceuta, two city enclaves on Africa's northern coast.
Culturally the contrasts are equally striking. The ancient Romans built great cities and extraordinary monuments, some of which rival the best Roman remains in Italy. Moorish invasion and occupation brought an Eastern influence that shaped the Spanish language, its architecture and its cooking. Large Jewish communities contributed their scholarship and business acumen. Spain was indeed a melting pot of cultures and religions, and in Spanish cities and towns Jews, Moors and Christians generally lived in peace.
The nation of Spain took shape under the Catholic Kings and became the most powerful country in sixteenth and seventeenth century Europe. Today Spain is a democracy comprised of Autonomous Regions. Each has a distinctive appearance, singular history and cultural traditions, a regional cuisine, and often a language of its very own that coexists with Spanish.
